Lancashire English Glossary – Compiled by Fred Holcroft
Paperback, 36 pages, published 2015 by Abson Books London
The Lancashire dialect (Lanky) encompasses several different sub-dialects which peacefully co-exist between the River Mersey and the sands of Lune (the River Lune is a river in Cumbria and Lancashire). To the North of the region Lakeland and Northumbrian influences predominate, while to the South the “posh people” of Cheshire speak Standard English while their “social inferiors” are almost Midlanders in dialect.
Although the Scousers of Liverpool are historically and geographically part of Lancashire, they have evolved an accent, dialect, culture, an entire way of life even, all of their own.
